A bit about me: Before I joined the real estate industry, I worked for an MNC in a commercial role.
My role within the business unit was about managing the revenue numbers to make sure we would hit/exceed OKRs set from the board. That essentially meant managing the business unit's P&L to ensure each segment of cost were managed efficiently and effectively.

It was similar to being a business owner but I was just an employee.
Today, I tap on my expertise of running a business for my clients as I look at every part of their property portfolio to find gaps and opportunities - where they can be maximised for better returns for their money.
A property is not just a home but it is an essential and huge component of our overall assets.
Some view it as a cost since we are living there. Some view it as an investment as we use a significant portion of our retirement monies (from our CPF).
No matter what you view it as - what is important is that you are able to recognise the role our home/property plays in our overall financial and retirement plans.
